Minimize Heat Loss by Creating a Barrier Between Bare Feet and the Floor

July 19, 2009 00:07 AM  BY  JEN HALLAM

SunTouch Floor Heating Mats Eliminate Cold Feet

My feet are always cold. I wear slippers in the summer. Granny slippers, as my husband affectionately calls them. Heat loss through my feet is a serious deal for me. When I visit my parents I turn green with envy because they have a heated tile floor. My feet wander around bare and free when we walk the halls of their remarkable heated tile floor. As I build my dream house in my mind, the tile and hardwood floors are sprawled over electric heated floor mats, and my granny slippers are tossed into a dusty forgotten corner.

It is simple really, to minimize heat loss through the feet; one must first create a barrier between bare feet and the floor. Using a heated floor mat creates that barrier is a cost-efficient, easy-to-install method of doing just that. Heating your floor with under floor radiant heating mats is a project that can often be done at any stage of home building. A heated floor is surprisingly simple to install under tile, hardwood, or even carpeted floor. Many people enjoy the benefits of a slipper-less existence. One day I will too! For now I better go schedule another visit to foot heaven, er, I mean my parent’s house.

Versatile, Efficient, and Economical

November 04, 2008 00:11 AM  BY  STUART TAYLOR

You may not need to understand how a radiant floor warming mat system works efficiently to heat your family’s home in order to realize that it’s the best heating option for you. But if you have ever been curious as to how it works, then keep reading.

When a floor warming system is turned on, energy is forced through a conductive material to create resistance or heat. For most areas an electric line-voltage system is used. These systems use a special thermostat that has an integrated breaker for safety right at the power source.

And it’s versatile to your plans, too. A radiant floor warming mat can be used and controlled as a primary source of heat or even used as a supplemental heating source to add comfort to your living spaces.

Where the Heat is Needed

November 04, 2008 00:11 AM  BY  STUART TAYLOR

Whether you’re looking to reduce your electricity bill to reduce the strain on your pocketbook, or just concerned about energy usage in light of environmental issues, you can start with your heating systems. Heating our places is one of our greatest energy hogs. By taking a few steps, you can cut down the amount of electricity you use to heat your home. You’ll save money, as well as have a favorable impact on the environment.

Get heat where it’s needed. I remember a conversation I had with my grandpa a couple of years ago when he was complaining about his gas bill after a cold winter. What surprised me is that the money he and my grandma spent heating their home for the two of them was almost the same we spent heating our house for a full family. Why? Because many forced air systems are inefficient, and don’t provide a way to heat specific rooms, while bypassing rooms that are used less frequently. The ability to heat only the rooms you use could save you a lot of money during cold winter months. It doesn’t make sense to heat a guest bedroom that is used a few times a year. However, most forced air systems don’t give us a choice. So how to solve this dilemma?

The good news is that this problem can be easily solved, however, by utilizing radiant heat in the form of floor warming mats. Floor warming mats give you the ability to heat specific rooms, without heating other rooms that are used less frequently. Not only are floor warming mats extremely efficient, but the ability to heat only the rooms you use the most will help cut your heating bills, sometimes by as much as half.

Things to Consider When Remodeling Your Home

November 03, 2008 00:11 AM  BY  STUART TAYLOR

If you’re thinking of remodeling a bathroom or kitchen, there is something you should consider – Floor warming mats. If you’re not familiar with what floor warming mats are, they’re simply thin electric mats installed beneath your flooring. The floor warming mats are controlled by a timer-thermostat. To install this type of heating is very cost effective, especially when you consider how much money you’ll save on your heating bill. For an average sized bathroom, it will operate on less than 10 cents a day of electricity.

In theory, these products are very similar to electric blankets. They are made of a heat resistant wire which serpentines over a supporting material. They are safe, relatively easy to install, and extremely energy efficient. If you are remodeling, floor warming mats are the perfect solution. They’re inexpensive, and easy enough to install that a do-it-youselfer could install it.

Aside from the economical arguments for electric radiant heat are additional benefits, such as added comfort. Have you ever noticed during the winter how your feet can be icy cold, while you’re upper body and head are sweating? This is because traditional forced air heating puts the heat in the air, which rises to our head level. This leaves the air at our feet cold, and the air at our head hot. This is really not optimal, because our upper body and head areas are generally hot due to the fact that this is where the majority of our body heat escapes. Having electric radiant heat in the floor increases our comfort by bringing the heat to our feet, which leaves the air at head level cooler. This scenario creates the perfect level of comfort.
